We just use garden dirt with a sprinkle of DE in a kitty litter box for in the coop in the winter. Hubby filled a couple of 5-gallon buckets of dirt to put in the basement knowing we'd never be able to dig any if we needed more. You could probably mix a little of your sand in that and they'd maybe like it better.Welcome from the cornfields of SE Iowa! We tried play sand for dust bathing, it worked, but not ideal. Going to find something better so they can dust bathe better. We use hay in our run, cheap, entertaining for the ladies and makes amazing organic material when we change it. But we are also new, make a lot of mistakes too!
Agree with @TookieWelcome to BYC!
I used sand in my run, and eventually it all got compacted and nasty, because it would get wet. So I won't be using it again. Natural things like leaves and mulch would be better, in my opinion.
