We have been the victims of an out-dated crime! Our entire flock of 19 layers was stolen from the coop. I assumed at first that it was an animal, of course, but all the evidence (tire tracks, open human door, not a single feather on the fresh bedding, and more) point to thievery. We are totally perplexed and heart-broken.

Perhaps some of BYC readers are from the Hudson Valley and have been to recent live auctions (Greene County, Columbia, etc) and have spied my girls. Below is a description of them for anyone who may have acquired a new flock. Any information about the hens, or about someone who might be a suspect can be directed to the Red Hook police: Officers Van Wagner and Plass, 845 758 9961.

Friday the 9th, only four were stolen: A Welsummer, a black Australorp, A Road Island Red, and Cuckoo Marans.

On the 16th/17th, fifteen were taken. Their description is as follows: 3 Silver Spangled Hamburg hens (one whose crown is half torn off from a raccoon) and 1 rooster, 3. Auracanas (one with a poopy butt), 1 Buff Orpington (slight "rooster stress" on her shoulders/wings), 1 Speckled Sussex (feathers missing just behind her comb), 1 Silver Laced Wyandotte, 1 Welsummer, 1 Cuckoo Marans, 1 Plymouth Bardrock (clump of feathers missing the the right of her vent, and she constantly scolds), 1 small Black Australorp, and 1 Road Island Red. All were laying hens (all at least 1-year old).

Thank you for any information you might have.

Wow. That is terrible. I hope you catch whoever stole your birds. You should probably invest in surveylance camera and chain lock your pens. Those people might come back if you get new chickens.

How awful!

Some surveillance would be good. In the meantime, I'm looking for a good dog.

I can empathize completely! I lost 7 roosters and 12 ducks total to humans. Since the SO has been patrolling my place (to include spotlighting ME), the thefts have stopped. I hope you get your birds back, I never did.

I'm not hopeful about finding the girls again, which is heart-breaking. I've been perusing the emu and ostrich pages and thinking about that sort of surveillance... What a surprise that would be for the slime ball!

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear about your loss, hopefully you can find out who took them, someone was really heartless. I have to bring in my chickens if \\i leave the house as I know forsure they would go missing as chickens are rare in my area and alot of people seem interested in them.

this makes me so mad
