Chicken Rustlers in the Hudson River Valley :barnie

Just a thought, but have you checked out listings on Craigslist? Perhaps someone was trying to make a quick buck. Check not only your immediate area, but surrounding posts.

Sorry you went through this. Good luck in tracking them down.

WOW! So sorry to hear this. This happened to a BYC member here in Michigan recently, too. I have padlocks on my coop and the run.
When I heard about the theft on the Michigan thread it blew me away, that anyone could be that bold to take a whole flock of chickens. Someone else posted on the thread that laying hens were going for $20 a piece at nearby auctions, probably the incentive for the thefts. I still just can't believe the nerve and evilness of some people.
I hope you find yours and whoever did it gets caught soon

Thanks for the replies and the well-wishes. The Red Hook police are following one lead, and I'm calling all the animal auctions I can find, but those are few. I figure that at this point, spreading the word and encouraging other chicken keepers to be careful about their flocks.

In the meantime, fingers crossed for finding the guy.

you know I would call the local ASPCA and I would talk to the local paper and or news it might make an interesting human interest story also Id if you have the cash offer a reward you offer 500 or more and most folks will throw their own kids under the buss!!!!!

I was talking about putting locks on my coop. There is another poultry raiser in this town that has his coop locked. The way things are going lately, I believe I should.
I am also of the belief that someone has been vandelizing my hives in my father's orchard. I can keep bees in my yard, but not in the orchard. It just doesn't make sense. So my husband checked into getting one of those still picture things people use to photograph wildlife. It was over 200, but I might consider it.
But you might just want to get a prop......there are some dummy cameras for sale on NorthernTool......Can't remember the exact cost, but I wanna say they are under 15. If you have enough of them scattered about, aimed in different directions, it might scare off possible intruders.

Check wal mart for game cameras; they may have one for well under $100. Also E-bay; as technology advances, people sell the lower resolution ones for pretty low prices. And, failing that, watch "Chicken Run" for coop design ideas.

Unbelievable what some people will do. Sorry you are dealing with this. I hope they catch the bastards!

Marina, I'm in Massachusetts, but headed to Wappingers Falls tomorrow. If I hear of anything, I'll let you know. So sorry about this!

All of us are subject to skulduggery regarding our flocks sooner or later. I hope you get your flock back.
