My experience with trying chicken saddles on three of my hens was stressful and awful! The other hens started atacking the ones with the saddles. All are peaceful hens so that was tough. 9 checkens and 3 of each breed have a bald spot on their backs by the tail. They are 5 1/2 months old. All three saddled were 1 of each breed.

Lots of great people on here ready willing and able to help.
Glad to have you here. :woot

That's odd that they attacked them. :hmm

Were the saddles red or a color very different than the birds feathering?

Were they purchased saddles?
Can you post a picture of the saddle?

I did a no sew saddle for a bird many years ago. I used fleece of a close match to.the hens feather color. It worked for her......I am certainly no expert at hen saddles or why the others would freak out.

I know other folks will be along soon.

Hiya :frow
Nice to meet you!

Sorry your experience with saddles wasn’t the best. I had a hen that was over bred by my rooster.
She freaked out a bit. Ran around like a crazy girl. But by the end of the day she had accepted it. She didn’t get picked on.
I knew “why” she was missing feathers. There’s a typical pattern to the wear & tear from breeding. Back by the tail is not one of them. Have you determined why..your hens have bald spots?
Parasites?

Welcome to BYC. It sounds as if your birds are feather picking/plucking. The culprits are the birds that are in pristine feather condition. Do an on site search on Pin Less Peepers. They work and can frequently be removed once this bad habit is broken.

Welcome to Backyard Chickens! We are glad you joined the flock! :welcomeBYC is a helpful site providing all of the information you need to know about poultry. There is always space for members on the BYC roost! :highfive:

I am sorry your plan was not successful.
Pinless peepers would definitely work better than chicken saddles. The culprit is the one that deserves to have the stress put on them by wearing something, not the victim.

Hope you enjoy it here as much as we all do!
