Shade is necessary! Trees, shrubs, especially native fruiting shrubs, next to the coop. I have 2" to 4" rocks around mine at the coop, with mulch, so the birds don't dig them up.
Catnip, mints, whatever.
Vines are nice, but do try to avoid anything too toxic.

We have a lovely mulberry that will shade 1/3 to 1/2 of the coop and run area. That will be fun.
