Chicken sand box

Has anyone built a sandbox for their chickens? I was thinking of digging a wide hole and then putting a sandbox in it and mixing some mite treatment in with the sand to prevent mites while they dust bathe in it. What ratio for sand to treatment should I make?

Many have made a dust bath for their chickens. I never dug mine in though, thought it would be easier to move and clean out if it stayed above ground. As to putting a treatment in the mix, I would just mix in some wood ash in as a preventive and treat them directly for mites when I see them.

I have an area where I put sand and a little DE. The chickens like it but they'll dust bath anywhere.My run is mainly dirt anyway.

My run and coop is straw so that's why I wanted a little sand box

We built a 4x4 out of 12x2 wood. Filled with really good potting soil (only good dirt we can get around here), DE, sand, and a little bit of wood ash. They hit this every day for their dirt bath.
