What age can I start giving them chicken scratch or other treats?

I would not give them scratch before 6 weeks of age as it has been known to impact chicks' crops. Even after 6 weeks, I would only give it sparingly, if at all. Keep in mind that chicken scratch is not really chicken feed. Scratch consists primarily of cracked corn and several other grains, and while it is a source of energy, it is not a good source of vitamins, minerals, or protein. In cold, winter weather, chickens expend extra energy to keep warm and a little scratch just before the sun goes down can provide a little extra energy, but too much can cause obesity and obesity-related deaths.

Thank you Micheal that's exactly what I wanted to know.

Welcome to BYC!

X2 I would wait until they are at least 6 weeks old so they get as much starter early in life. However still go easy on them and keep the treats down to 10% of the daily diet.

Enjoy your new chicks and welcome to our flock!

My girls eat everything. I give them scratch here and there. None of them eat the small brown-ish balls (I have 6). I'm wondering what is? Curios why none of them like. Anyone have thoughts on this or experience the same.
