Chicken Shaming!

My girls got a few chicken nuggets today for a treat. I had a nice talk with them about how good they taste!

On an up note: I grabbed a few and measured their pubic bones, I can get 2 1/2 fingers between them.

Wow, on all of them? That's layer distance unless your fingers are very very tiny?

I have pretty fat fingers...short and stubby! LOL. I grabbed the 3 most mature looking girls and measured them. At 6 dang months someone better start laying something!

@andreanar- I don't know about your other pullets, but your Australorp is more than a month slower to start than mine. I see that all of your pictures show your girls out on grass. Do you let them free range? I'm wondering if some of them have actually picked a hidden spot somewhere and have a clutch of eggs hidden away?

I stopped free ranging a few weeks ago, as they are coming to pol, so they are confined to their coop and run while I wait for them to lay. I will start free ranging them again once they are laying nicely in their nest boxes. If they ever do!

OK. Have you been putting fake eggs or golf balls in their nest boxes? Chickens like to lay where they see other eggs.

Yup the fake eggs are in there! I'm all ready....apparently way before they are, but, jiminy crickets, they are 6 months old!

Today I got rid of my cockerel, so long Chief Cochin! He was pretty roughly mounting them. I brought the girls some high protein treats to celebrate their newfound peace. But again I come home to my empty egg basket!!
