Dear all,

One of my four backyard chickens just died, literally in my arms! I noticed when I went to give them an evening snack, that she was still sitting on the nest where I'd left her in the morning..... this did not seem normal to me. When I picked her up, she was lethargic. I was thinking of being egg bound but when I inserted a lubricated finger in her vent, it was empty. There was a yellow discharge around the vent though.
Does anyone have an idea what this might be? I'm a little worried that it may be infectious....

Thanks for your advice!

Karla

PS I tried to add a photo but I can't figure out how to do it (I have a MAC)

I'm very sorry to hear of your loss!

You can't add a picture because as a new member you need 10 posts before you can add photos.

Was the yellow discharge foamy?

Hi and welcome to BYC - sorry for your loss and i hope that the ER members can make suggestions as to what could have been wrong.

All the best

Hi CT Ken, I'm still new to the site and it's a bit overwhelming especially when you're looking for an instant cure for what's obviously a dying chicken ):
But it's good to know that thread is there! I will look it up.

So sorry for your loss. I too lost my oldest and best hen yesterday. She was in her nest box as if she feel asleep and didn't wake up, she was a,sweet, girl. I hope you can find out what happened to yours. Prayers for comfort

I lost my beautiful golden Wyandotte yesterday Athena she was acting strange and tired. last two weeks but still eating and drinking and laying. Three years old.
Nothing looked abnormal could this just be her life span? So sad
