Hi all, we have a rooster who has hurt his leg. He is in a dog crate but is constantly trying to stand and move around which i'm worried is hurting him more as he stumbles. We are thinking of trying a sling but for how long should he be in it during a day? Thanks for any help.

Not sure there's a limit, as long as he's able to eat and drink. Poor guy. I kept a chick in one pretty much all day. I don't know if that's what's advised, but it didn't hurt my girl any.

Have you tried a splint? Depends on the injury, but lots of people have used them successfully. I'd search this site for it.

Thank you, i haven't tried a splint as he doesn't seem to have any swelling or break. He got stuck in a hole and then has been struggling to walk, stand on his leg ever since.
Theres no evidence of injury though and he does move it and grip when you hold him so I thought he probably just needs rest but he won't stop still and I don't want to make it worse.

If he just needs to rest it, the sling sounds like a good idea. If he tolerates it, I don't think it would make it worse. Just needs food and water close.

I assume he's inside?

Yes he's in a dog crate in the house but he keeps trying to stand and move around and he stumbles alot so I was hoping to keep him more immobile to recover.
Thank you I will make him a sling and see how he copes.

He actually seems alot calmer in it and is alot more happy in himself.

I would take him out every few hours to lie down, rest or stretch, and at night to sleep. Slings are not meant to be used constantly. If he tries to escape it raise it up higher so that his feet do not touch the floor. If he fights it too much, don’t use it. Do you know what his injury is?

Thank you, yes we had already thought to take him out at night time but we will take him out during the day aswell. Thank you.
