Yesterday we found a chicken snake in the coop. I have recently been told that if I sprinkle sulpher around the coop it will keep the snakes away. Is this safe? I free-range my chickens and don't want them to eat anything toxic. I know about the golf balls, door knobs, etc. but would rather keep them away! Any advise would be appreciated.

Sulfur is a deterrent but not a 100% guarantee. Elemental sulfur is not generally toxic, but I do not know how much would be to much. I don't think a chicken would eat too much to hurt it.

How big was the snake, how old are the chickens? I am surprised the chickens didn't eat the snake?

Sulfur won't do anything to keep snakes away.
