I was showing my neighbor across the road my new chickens yesterday, and told him I was going to chink up the boards, to help keep the chicken snakes out. His answer was, didn't make any difference to what I did, a chicken snake would find away to get into a rural chicken house. Just gotta go check on sitting chickens every once in a while. Think goodness for those 4-wheel mules!

Welcome to Backyard chickens Ronnie, you are much braver than I am - just reading that s word makes me crumble. Anything that makes me scream like a banshee can not be good for anyone's health.

I've read often on BYC that someone went to get eggs out from under a hen and found a S hiding under her, keeping warm, and taking eggs when they felt like it. Or getting into a nest with newly hatched and soon to be swallowed chicks. I TOTALLY HATE THEM. I hope you can keep them away.

Maybe getting guineas would help. I've read they will mob a snake and drive it away from their territory.

Drumstick Diva, glad you mention it, I need to take my 3-prong pitchfork back down to the coop, not for go picking up more pine straw, but it works wonders on those 5-6-foot fat chicken snakes. Just turn it slightly off sidways, it's like shooting them with a scatter gun, can't miss. Take them outside and then work them over good. Cheap that away to. Have a blessed day!!

This is the New members introductions forum. I see that you have already posted here. You are likely to reach out to more members by posting in the most appropriate forum - e.g. this thread could have been possibly more suited to the "Predators and Pests" forum. Maybe something worth bearing in mind for the future.

Best wishes

X2!

Well CT I'm a new member how do I get to the to where all the other folks post? I was just replying, but always with a story of my past experiences.

Go to the "Forum" tab, it will show a drop down menu. Then go to "Raising backyard chickens" in the drop down menu - this will reveal a second drop down menu - choose "Predators and pests". Once there, click "start a new thread". Hope that helps
