Is there anything else you can think of that they really like? I'm gonna have to find something they like alot for them to come to me to get it! Otherwise I'll never get them back in the coop! Thanks for all your help!

They love bugs. (blech) But mine come running for veggies, bread, just about anything that is different than their daily food.

Hmmmm maybe they're just to young know how to eat all that since they've only had feed since they were born. I sure hope they'll start eating these things so that I can start teaching them to come to me... otherwise I don't know what I'll do as far as catching them to go back in their coop!!

I never taught mine to come back for treats. Mine only get treats outside of their coop. They all return and roost inside the coop at night though.... once in blue moon somebody gets "lost" and we have to go find them and stick them in.

The chickens figured out that scratch comes from the feed shed, if so much as head in that direction, 20 chickens come running, hoppin' and flying after you.

If you would really like a hoot, give them a live garter snake. There will have hours of fun and games with it, as they first subdue it, then tenderize it, before finally swallowing it head first. If you look closely at the winning chicken you can even see the garter snake still wiggling inside your chicken's craw or crop.

First time I saw mine with a snake, I about died! One gal caught it - the snake was about a foot long but skinny. She took off running and all the other chickens took after her! I'm not a fan of snakes so I went running, too. UNTIL I realized the chicken was in a pen and couldn't get the snake near me! DUH!

The other hens caught up with the snake charmer and grabbed the snake so we had a big tug-of-war going on. Then . . . they tore the snake in two!!

Both girls gobbled down their respective pieces after tearing it in half.

Argghh! Watching them chase down and eat snakes and frogs is fun to watch but I'll admit I feel a bit queasy the next time I go to eat eggs!

Darlene, if you are giving your girls anything except for their crumble, be sure to give them grit. When you do start letting them out for supervised play time, it's much easier to lead them to where you want them than it is to try to catch them. Start training them by using the same words and tone of voice when ever you want them to come to you, and reward them with the treat. they'll soon associate your call with goodies. It also helps to put the treat in a special container that they will associate with good stuff. Then, all you'll have to do is shake your bucket, and call them, and they'll come running. They're pretty smart when it comes to food. When I plan to let my girls out to play, I always hold back some of their food or daily snacks, so when it's time to go in, they're very motivated.

We use a can of raisins when it's time to gather the herd. They come running from all over the yard when they hear me shake the can.
