Chicken sticking neck out and opening mouth wide

thank you! She was my first Egyptian Fayoumi, and got me hooked. Unfortunately I lost her to a neighbor's stupid dog, but I ended up driving up to Washington to buy 3 Fayoumis from some cool people I met on BYC!

Chickenfeet I am glad your babes are better! MI I hope yours continue to get better

I also had a couple of my two week olds doing the "gagging thing". It went on for about a week and has now stopped. Seems pretty common?

This sounds a bit more like mycotoxin infection to me. Chick mash is dusty and that dust clings to surfaces and in corners. If it is humid or the bedding gets moist- the dust begins to grow fungus and mold spores. Keep oregano flakes handy (dollar store shelves are often overloaded with it) and mix this into your chick starter. This can help keep certain harmful bacterium from growing in the crops of the birds. A few teaspoons of ground cinnamon and just a pinch of allspice in the chick starter dish go a very long way as well as they contain material that are high in natural anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. If you are serious about your birds- get them off chick mash- mix it into finch seed- sprout radishes and oregano for the birds to forage on and make certain they have a BabyCake in their brooder.

I'm having a similar problem - 3 month old chick stretching her neck out to breathe when she tries to move or exerts herself. She is also unable to walk. Toes curled. She eats a little and seems to be drinking okay. She is separated from the others. Been like this for a week. I've made a post about this but thought I'd add to this thread too.

I am a newbie, but i believe gapeworms are unlikely in a bird that age that is, presumably, indoors.

My chicks do that sometime, often after eating, and i believe they are "adjusting their crop" (the bump they get after eating kind of above their chest). If the poo is normal, the eyes/beak are clear of discharge, and it's behaving otherwise normally (active, eating, drinking, napping, as opposed to standing with eyes closed and droopign wings etc), i think it will be ok.

I just am having that problem with a mother hen that has had two chicks hatch one of them a day ago and the other two days ago. she is sticking out her neck and opening her beak. She does this almost every 2 minutes when i was watching her.
Any ideas?

I recently lost 2 Welsummer chicks to the same symptoms I purchased 3 from an individual All were smaller than the Dominique chicks I got at the same time One I lost at 2 months a small roo and the other at almost 3 months a hen Both had the gasping and neck stretching The other chicks now 3 months old seem to be fine but I am watching them closely I examined both chicks and only saw tiny red bugs on the last one that died I did a little research but did not find anything definite as to what they may have died from
