Chicken stopped laying on eggs

I have this one hen that had a clutch of eggs she had been laying on. There was 9 or 10. She had been on them for about 2 weeks or so. All of a sudden, she stopped. This is her second time to do this. I took the eggs thinking that they were good to eat and there was chicks in 7 of them. I'm devastated. Can anyone tell me about how many weeks they've developed?

It's certainly not! I honestly didn't know that was gonna be in there!

Yeah--I know. It's a disturbing experience.

Can you candle them? That way, you can just throw away or bury the developing eggs, rather than cracking them open.

I know this feeling. When I was about 6 - 7yrs, we had a bunch of chicks that we were raising under the house. One day I was told to stay upstairs, not to come down, ha ha.
I went down to see my parents culling the teenagers. I never ate chicken nor eggs again until I was in my 20s. It's pretty dramatic.

My Mom won't eat my chickens eggs, she's afraid of what she may see when she cracks one open.
