Chicken Sty

This may indeed need to be removed by a vet (no anaethesia necessary I would think and so therefore should be affordable)
....it could be an abscess which in birds will not "burst" but must be manually expelled... see here:

ABSCESS (one of the best articles describing the condition in birds and comparison of the differences to mammals) ... written for the layman:
(small excerpt)
..."In birds the abscess must be opened and the accumulated pus scraped out manually. The abscessed area should then be cleaned with an antiseptic solution and wound medication placed on the site. Bandaging of the wound will aid in preventing further infection."

Thank you VERY much for your help. The information that you provided is very helpful and it let's me know what I need to do to proceed. I have searched and found a vet that should be able to take care of this.

Thank you again. Thanks to all who replied with concern.

So far, the closet vet who will see a chicken is 90 miles away. He has been off but will be back on tomorrow. I will call him and see what he says. The receptionist says that he does see chickens. He saw a turkey on last week who had broken it's leg. I'm not sure what the cost will be or what he will do. Will find out when I call. I know that I will pay more for the vet visit then I paid for the chicken but I can't see me not helping my girl. Thanks to everyone for their help.

Bless you for being such a good chicken mommy and responsible pet owner. My birds are purely pets and I have gotten more pleasure out of them than I have with any rabbit, canary, parakiet etc. Everyone needs a chicken!

Diana (dlhunicorn) is VERY experienced with all things chicken - she's also extremely busy, so don't worry if it takes her a bit to get back with you. AND - follow her instructions to the "T" - she REALY knows her stuff! GOOD LUCK!!

ETA: Oopps - sorry, I was late posting this!

Once again I must protest and say I only know what the vet articles tell ... my only claim is that I have read (and read and reread) every article on in my library so some it stuck I guess

Well, I always feel like I have a definitive answer when you post in any of my threads, Diana. Regardless of how you gained your knowledge, you most definitely do have it - and ALL BYC members should feel honored that you're a member and offer advice!

Well regardless of what your protests are, YOU ARE an asset to this group for providing such valuable information to BYC members who are in need. I'm grateful that your name was provided. I read the article and I learned a lot. I had no idea. And now I have linked up with a vet who will be able to help my girl. Just keep doing what you're doing. We appreciate everything that you do.
