Hello everyone, this is my very first time on BYC. Many articles have been very helpful and I'm thankful for that!

I hoped never to go through this, but here we are. I have a wonderful laying hen that is now 1 year and 4 months old. On Saturday I noticed she wasn't feeling well, it looked more like heat stress. Standing up with eyes closed. I then noticed she started drinking... a lot. Her crop was immense. But she got better in the evening. We have been dealing with very hot days. Sunday went perfect, but yesterday, again, she was acting lethargic. Closed eyes, lots of naps, not active at all. The weather was 26 celsius en the humidity over 64. It didn't get any better in the evening so I gave her a cool bath, some berries and fresh water and let her spend the night in our hallway, it is cooler on the cold floor. The next morning she didn't improve. Her crop was also not emptied, felt full of water. Her poop was still very runny, first creamy color and after a while just clear water. We have a very good animal clinic that also does poultry so I went. But they couldn't really find out. They did bloodwork and an echo. Could not see a lot, except some that there might be an infection. I still believe it's a heatstroke. But her organs aren't failing. She lookd horrible and near dead when I was there with her. Heavy breathing after a while, but I believe this might be from stress as they were doing all the tests. They also found that there was a snail in her crop, small one, and asked if we poison snails. We do not do that and live deserted. So here I am, been crying all day long, waiting for the verdict, praying she'll survive. She is hospitalized now and on infectionsblockers (that's what they call it) and antibiotics, fluids. Did any of you had some experience with symptoms like that ?

Thank you, Othilde

Hi Tookie, thanks for answering. Her crop is not emptying because of the state she is in right now. The vet does not think it is a sourcrop. I got an update that he gave her some oxygen to help her breathing and that helped, also some medicine but that needs time to have effect. Her condition is the same at the moment, critical. He hopes she makes it through the night. God, I hope she'll make it. She deserves a long happy life, that's how sweet and loved she is. 🧡

Oh, wait, she's at the vet right now and is staying the night there?

Yes, she is in the animal clinic hospitalized. So that they can follow every progress in her condition and give her medications or tubefeed her..

She passed away overnight. Fly high, beloved one.
