We'll be there as well. SAU 33 shuts down the schools for the days of the fair. We're going to go 1st thing on Thursday to see if there's any show quality breeds we're interested in for sale. It seems were always going late and missing out. It helps so much that they're tested. I'm determined to get some beautiful birds this year!

It is definitely a chicken show. Many are available but not all. If you look at the cards on the cages they're in it'll show you if they're available. I'd love to pick up some good quality heritage breeds. There's also a poultry fanciers show in a couple of weeks. Never been to the second show so don't know if they also have birds for sale there as well.

There will be birds for sale at the NH Poultry Fanciers show as well (You won't see the same folks you see at the swaps). The Poultry Fanciers also run the poultry barn at the Deerfield Fair.

Sounds good. I like doing the swaps but want to get into the heritage and rare breeds. I have some young Cream Legbars from GFF and am hoping for some quality BRs.

How complicated is it to buy a chicken at the fair? I am looking for a Silkie hen, not for show but as a pet.

Sorry, not too sure. I've always missed out in the past. I'm really hoping to be able to pick up some beauties on Thursday though. Anyone else bought at the Deerfield or Poultry Fancier Fairs?

Hi Puglady!
I have been to both and looked into buying. It did not seem that it would be too difficult once you speak with the admin people and could get ahold of the breeder. I have not bought any birds there but will go look and see what they have this year again - there was not anything I was interested in for sale. The Poultry Fancier last year show seemed to have nicer birds than what I saw at the Fair last year and they also had birds for sale outside the show barn. I remember a HUGE blue Cochin Rooster that someone was selling...$30 I think. He was stunning to see and not part of the show. I believe a gentleman also had the most beautiful Black Orpingtons or something similar in size showing and for sale...The size scared my husband so they did not make it home with me...but we'll see what happens this year.
If you go on Thursday let me know what you see - I may try to go after work with the kid but may have to wait until Saturday.

Thanks so much for the info! I'm thinking of getting a heritage BR and putting him over some RI Reds for some nice quality sex links for next years swaps. Of course I'm also interested in some of the rare breeds as well. Might be that the Poultry Fancier would be more down my alley for the rare breeds. My father offered to purchase a sportsman cabinet incubator for me

so I'm looking into doing my own sex links at next years swaps to support my new rare breed habit. I'm hoping that if I offer the male chicks very cheaply someone will want to grow them out as traditional meat birds.
