For those of us ordering pullets to raise for swaps next year Meyer Hatchery has come out with the 2013 pricing. I have checked pricing on a couple of breeds, Buff Orps and Barred Rocks. Next years price increase looks to be 10%. It'll be interesting to see what other hatcheries follow suit. Guess this means a definite increase in what we'll need to charge next year as well. Increased chick prices as well as increased feed prices.

Is anyone interested in a Blue Plymouth Rock cockerel in splash color?

Free for the taking, we live in Woodsville, just didn't want to send him to freezer camp. Message me if interested.

Interesting little happenstance at my house yesterday.

Daughter was doing chores yesterday afternoon during the huricane and around the corner walks the missing brown leghorn hen that has been missing for a while. We assumed since she would never stay in the run that she had been eaten. Nope....she brought home 7 little chicks in a hurricane!!!

What do I want with 7 outside chicks in November!! Thanks mother nature.... gggrrr!

omg april, that is the cutest story ever!!!

by the way, I have a beautiful splash cochin pullet from your eggs. I am so happy.

I had a fantastic time at the swaps last weekend. the only problem I had was that at the end of the weekend I had pretty much the same number of chickens that I started with.

saturday one of our people had two black polish pullets that came from a top breeder. I have never seen polish so large or with crests so huge. WOW. I couldn't take my eyes off them.

they live at my house now.

sunday I brought 2 (extra) birds because I bought the polish.

nh nanna noticed one of my girls and I noticed some birds she was selling. before either one of us had set up, 2 of hers were at my spot and she took one of my 2 extra girls. I got silver americaunas. they are very beautiful. I have a silver grey dorking that is the same color.

I hope everyone made it through the storm with no problems. we are still without power. when I got home last night I put a few birds in a carrier to bring in to the house. I walked though the yard with limbs falling around me. I immediately decided that everyone else was on their own. who came in to the house? one of my best silkies, the 4 new birds I picked up last weekend, and my newest rooster that I am head over heels for. he is a cream legbar and the new girls are for him.
I am happy to say that everyone made it through the storm with no problems.

We never lost power, believe it or not. I have 50 eggs in the incubator, so that's a big relief.

Janet, that boy's brother just started crowing - high but very quiet. I thought it was a bantam I was hearing. Let's hope he stays that way!

We will have some cool stuff in the spring; the incubator is full of DMRippy's designer mixes. Super blue egg layers, olive eggers, sex-linked Marans, and a bunch of others. And we'll be hatching over the winter from our own stuff; the big girls are getting a Sultan (the same one that Janet has made gorgeous babies with) and a Cream Legbar, the mediums are getting a black Silkie, and the littles will be Serama, Old English, and Japanese under a couple of tiny unrelated Serama boys.

Thanks for such great swaps; we only made it to one but we sold 20 in that one! The ads we posted at the Plaistow TC were successful too. After a big rooster cull we are down to 50 adults, most bantams, to overwinter. Should be doable.
