Hi all,

thinking of making a few swings for my chickens.
I have a ton of black walnut saplings on my property and am wondering if it’s safe to use dry black walnut branches with bark as swings for my chickens??
Let me know

Black walnut trees and products contain a substance that can be harmful to some vegetation. Don't use black walnut in compost piles and be careful what you plant where the roots can reach. By harmful I mean it can kill certain plants. That substance is called juglone if you want to look it up.

Horses can be allergic to black walnut. Allergic to the point it could kill them. Do your own research but since you have those saplings beware if you have or want to get horses.

As far as I know that is it. There is nothing associated with black walnut that pose any risk for chickens. I would not have any problems using those saplings for perches, with or without the bark. Good question because there are risks associated with black walnut, but not to chickens.

Thank you Ridgerunner, I knew about the horses but couldn't find anything on the internet about chickens!! I really appreciate the reply. The farmer we bought our property from Planted 5-7 acres of black walnuts on one side of our property for the wood value. So i've been cleaning up the saplings to let the larger ones continue to grow!! hoping they end up to be part of my retirement fund!!!
