Chicken toe nail problems, really long! Pics

Round two of toe nail clipping. I sat on the couch with Show Off, I can't afford another keyboard. This time I snipped one nail and she turned her head around like the Exorcist and grabbed the Chihuahua Angel's tail. Cut her tail, Angel screamed, scared the cats, they knocked over my crochet bag and yarn went everywhere. Show Off got loose and ran screaming around the dining room slipping on the linoleum under the table. We only got one nail trimmed.

She needs a muzzle and a straightjacket.
Have you tried lying her on her side or back covered with a towel? Or will she just not settle no matter what?

I've got a three old SSHB girl that is just like that and twice a year I have to trim her feet which she hates it. She would use her goose steps to get around. She does not scratch around for food.

Oh gosh, after you get through this nightmare, be sure to have cinder blocks, patio block, something abrasive in the coop and the run for self-trimming by friction. You are not going to want to go through this again! Keep some wound powder handy in case you hit a quick...

Not sure if those battery-operated Pedipaws would work...

LynneP, thank you for that idea. I'm going to put a couple of flat cinder blocks in all of my coops this week. I was just thinking before reading your reply, "Ain't no way I'm EVER gonna trim a chicken's nails."

I hear you! I was cut on the jaw( 4", deep) by an affectionate and enthusiastic flying pullet (Dorothy) in the spring of 2008, and resolved to get the nails under control, fast. Outside the platform in the run is supported by concrete blocks and inside the waterer is on top of a patio block supported by cinder blocks. End of problem!

Well, the cinder block would be a great idea, if the Princess would get off her roost and USE it! She doesn't like to be on the ground, she never has. Even was she was a tiny little hatchling, she would find something to perch on rather than stand in the dirt.

She is sitting in my lap, watching me type, enjoying the vibrating massage chair,,, as long as I don't get near her feet she's a happy little hen!

Well dang, I'm going to have to check Goldie's nails tomorrow. She the bantam Cochin in my avatar. She MUCH prefers the roost to the ground, lazy little so and so. She prefers the highest bar too, so as to survey her kingdom.
