Chicken Tower - Chickens roosting on top of each other

I have 2 Buff Orpington hens and they prefer to roost on top of each other during the day and sleep on top of each other at night. I call it, the "Chicken Tower." I was surprised to see this behavior, hence the picture. They don't do it every night, but most nights. I am new to raising chickens and I thought this was bizarre behavior. They crack me up!!!

I've only had chickens about a year now so definitely no expert but I don't think I've read about or seen pictures of this before. Certainly looks odd (and uncomfortable for the one on the bottom).

I'd be interested in hearing what others have to say about this type of behavior too. Is it a dominance-related action?
