My husband just finished building a nifty chicken tractor we can move around the pasture. This will help our poor soil as well as take care of our grasshopper problem, while giving us some great eggs.

One problem. How do I go about finding started pullets or hens? Long ago we had chickens when we lived in PA, and we bought all our stock from Moyer's. I wouldn't know where to begin looking here in SC. I live near Elloree.

By the way, HI!!! I am new here.........in case you didn't notice.

Hi, welcome to byc, we want pics of your tractor. Everyone here loves pics. You could do a search for your state in the backyard hatcheries here. Welcome

Check with your local Farm and Home Supply store and the feed & grains. I'm worried that unless you can find an individual close by with chickens to spare you may have to wait until Spring.

Good luck and Welcome!!!

You can find a lot of pullets on craigslist, freecycle, etc. You could also think about rescuing some birds from chicken farms, etc.

Our farrier is offering us some free ranged hens, but I am not sure what breed. He's away in Wyoming right now. I figured if there were any South Carolinians here, they might know someone who knows someone......

I had too many things on my plate to raise peeps. I have goats, cattle and my daughter's two horses. This tractor took a long time, made of lightweight angle iron, kind of like a giant erector set. Wood rots and PVC shatters in our sunny humid climate, so we had to find something that would last. It is balanced on big knobby wheels for easy moving. Weaving the chicken wire took the longest time. My husband said he'd be crazy to do this again.

I'll work on getting pictures.

Might be a while before I get them downloaded, though.

Post it on byc. In the title mention something like "Looking for Pullets in SC." Some one will answer. If I was closer I'd share a few with you.
