Because of my book, readers sometimes think I'm a chicken expert, and I'm NOT AT ALL! Joe and I were thrown in at the deep end and we just get by with our chicken-keeping with help from the internet, particularly BYC. Anyway, I had an email today from a lovely lady, and I have no idea what to suggest. I'd be so grateful if anybody could help.

This is part of what she wrote:

"I've got a poorly chicken, it's the young looking one, she seems very quiet, bit off balance, eyes are half shut and to an untrained eye I'm wondering if she is egg bound!! If so, do you know what I can do to help her? I've just been to check on them and the 2 ok ones are sitting on the roof of the nest box and the poorly one is standing in the nest box looking very sorry for herself.
Would appreciate any advice you could share.
Thanks
A worried new chicken mum"

Bearing in mind that we live in Spain, and vets and medication are very different here - can anyone advise me what to say?

Thanks in advance,

Victoria

Sorry to hear this. It is the infamous " I have a sick chicken" I'm far from competent in the emergencies section, and with so few clues almost impossible to diagnose. Hopefully others with sick chicken experience will come along and help.
You could suggest supportive care. Seperate and keep in a warm quiet place. Offer vitamins and electrolights, maybe anti-biotics. Check it over thoroughly for any other signs like egg bound or crop bound. Try probiotics.

Sorry I'm not more helpful
