I have now run across two chickens who stop laying, become droopy and listless, look depressed, have their heads hunkered down and are gasping for air like they are drowning! If you tip a bird with these symptoms forward so that their head is lower than there feet, fluids just pour out of them as if they were a pitcher. both chickens eventually died despite steam treatments, electolytes, indoor confinement, and sulmet. Rest of flock not affected. Solve my mystery please

I feel like a bad chicken mom

Gosh, I am so sorry. I just lost a girl to this after nursing her for over a month. I don't know what the cause is. It seems to me that my girl was throwing up mucus that was accumulating in her crop. A couple of times it was really thick and sticky, other times watery and thin. She was exclusively mouth-breathing. I guess that what kills them is that the fluid goes into their lungs.

I am really grateful that the rest of my flock was not affected either. Sorry I can't help with a diagnosis. You are NOT a bad chicken mama! We do the best we can for our birds and sometimes these things happen.

Thanks for your support! And, come to think of it, my pond gets rather green sometimes, wonder if it could be algea poisoning if they drink from it too often....asperilligos or something I think it's called-anyone else know about it?

Very interesting info link-thanks. I think I'll have my pond tested and move my chicken coop to another location just incase.
