Chicken Was Attacked by Dogs

It hasn't bled yet, and is quite large, yet isn't deep. But darn, we added an ointment that blocks out bacteria, and is pretty good. We used it on our dogs when they got into a fight and were just fine. She eats normally and drinks, loves making a mess of it. I've not heard her make a noise yet(I have left her to herself in my room to help her calm down) except screaming when I was getting her and carrying her around.

Sounds like she is doing pretty good. Eating/drinking is a great sign. If the ointment you used worked well at preventing infection in dogs, it will very likely work on chickens. :) However, I would keep a watchful eye on it though to ensure that it is healing properly. I hope that she makes a rapid recovery! ;)

I hope so too! She's a fighter, no doubt.

So sorry about one of your hens. Check around for the other 4. You can be sure they are hiding somewhere. Keep looking. Very good that you brought your chicken in . Also, great she is eating. Water is very important and warmth.

I had one of my chickens attacked by a fisher cat several months ago. What a mess. The fisher really hurt her badly. She totally recovered. Keep your girl in until all signs of scabs are gone so that the remaining chickens don't hurt her. I brought my chicken outside to visit the others with supervision. I think it helped them all . I also gave her a warm mush ....mealworms , food, small bread pieces and a little warm water....all mixed up.......she loved it and I felt better...lol
Best of luck. Keep us posted!

Thanks! I cooked her some eggs and gave them to her. She seems tired, and possibly sore. I'll be a lot happier once I see that it has scabbed over. She was low on the pecking order, but I think she'll be even lower after this.
But, we did find the rest of the hens, except one black sex link. The chickens seem fine, one was missing a few bum feathers but that was it. I'm upset from the lost hen, but relieved for not as many lost as I thought.

UPDATE
"She's gonna die." is the most recently said sentence I heard. Her wound is looking disgusting. It's not infected, but the meat that is exposed is seeming like it's scabbing up-or something. Brother describes it as if you grabbed your own skin and peeled it back. She's doing much better, but oh gosh she is sore. I'm terrified. Will she die of infection, if her wound is big?

In my experience , keep doing the treatment to help her heal her wounds. Keep her warm and watered and healthy food that she likes to eat....baby food, mashed pellets with a bit of water might help. The best sign is if she acts normal and is eating normally. They are very resilient little birds. Talk with her and keep her company when you can.....stay positive. Go on this site and check out some past pictures of wounded birds....it is really a lesson in how chickens pull through and survive!!! I will be thinking of you and your bird. Does she have a name?

Thank you so much! I don't really name my hens, should I? I can't really tell my Black sex links apart, haha.

No worries, they don't need names. I reread this thread and noticed Vetricyn was suggested. You can buy it at almost any grain and feed store. That is the one I use and have confidence in. My chicken who was attacked was also at the bottom of the pecking order. Her name is Sweetheart. She looks better than ever now and is not as skittish as she once was. Nice that you are giving her eggs....crushed egg shells is a great source of protein for her too. It will all take some time....but then you will be a pro!

I'm cheering for the little fighter, she's gone through a lot, haha. Found her nibbling on the egg which I'm super happy about. I haven't really messed with her after adding the ointment the first time. Should I do this type of spray that is like antibacterial? Or leave her be for now.
