Chicken Waterer vs Nipple mechanism?

I've been thinking which option that i could choose that will avoid any respiratory problems with my birds.


The options are

Using a standard chicken waterer,


or the chicken nipple option?


which is the best according to your experience and why?

I like the nipple waterer. The water remains clean...poop and debris free.

I found the nipple very good, but I could not find a model that wouldn't leak a bit. In summer I am going to try to set it up so the leaking water does not end up in the bedding. In winter it is hard to prevent freezing when it is really cold.

I bought mine from QC Supply. No leaks at all. But....cost more than if you make it yourself.

Just this fall I cahnged from a normal open fount to the Horizontal Watering Nipples.
My only regret is not changing sooner.
These things work perfectly. I've mounted 3 nipples about an inch up from the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket.
The bucket hangs in the coop by the handle and has a snap on lid. Nipples are at eye height for the chickens.
Water stays pefectly clean, especially when adding some ACV.

For this winter, I cut a hole in the lid and hang a submersible dog bowl heater in the bucket, just above the bottom.
We've had several -10 degree nights this winter and I've had no issues at all.

With 5 Hens, I only have to refill once per week.
Best part is, even after a week, the water is still clean.

I bought from ebay, do a search on Horizontal watering nipples.

Mike. I never thought of mounting nipples horizontally on the bucket. Do you have a picture?

I started my chicks on nipple waterers the day I got them, they're doing great with them. I made the watering system (pic below) for the coop. It will be supplying 8 hens and 4 ducks with water. Everything with the exception of the nipples (ebay) was purchased at Home Depot, all in I spent about $30, that includes $7 for the fancy screw off lid. I went with the hose and PVC rather than attaching the nipples directly to the bucket so that I can access their water from outside the coop. I will be making PVC feeders with easy access as well.

Moon ..Here's a link from a quick google search.
They are a different kind of nipple, you can't mount the vertical ones horizontally.
