This chicken was brought to me by a friend whom found her on the side of the road. Her guess, she fell off a commercial chicken truck. She is a debeaked fryer bird and has alot of scabs on this wing, behind her comb, and on her leg joints. The rest of the scabs dont look too bad. She looks like a healthy fat chicken with a few cuts, bruises, and a little limp, except for the wing. It doesnt stink, but it looks shockingly bad to me. There is green discoloration that looks the same color as if colored by a crayola marker. There is no odor from her wounds.
Does this wound look like she should be dispatched? Does it look like it might heal? It would be nice if she could be patched up and live a life outside of a cage for once.....save one of the commercial chickies. Any suggestions for patching or otherwise, would be greatly appreciated.

Some people take such bad care of their birds. I'm so glad you were there to help her.

You have a few things you can do. You can try helping her out (get her on healthy food, put some medication on the wounds, keep her from over-heating), but unfortunately broilers are bred for meat, not health, and rarely live past one year of age. They are prone to heart attacks, leg problems, and many other conditions. They can also get green muscle disease in their wings if they are stressed into flapping a lot.

I hope she gets better.

I just wanted to post closure on this post. The chicken is healing up well, she is learning how to eat chicken treats, and it wont belong until she is ready to be put in general population......with my other ladies. ;)
