chicken wire / poultry netting

what wold poultry netting actually keep out?
think coons could chew through it?

or would i just be wasting money?

gonna run it above 1* 3 inch welded wire squares in the coop? and run

above where dogs and coyotes could get to it


was gonna run a strand on the chicken side on the groun to keep in chicks
any thoughts would be nice

NOTHING!!! Chicken/poultry wire keeps out NOTHING!! It will only keep chickens IN!!!

Dogs and racoons can EASILY get through chicken wire. See some of the posts in the forum!!! People talk it breaking like "tissue paper" when determined animals want to get through!!!

Read some of the posts -- people recommend that you use hardwire cloth for the bottom 2 feet or so of the run.

I also think that most suggest 1 x 2 welded wire for the coop and run.

Do some research here -- lots of other comments!!

Poultry netting just keeps the birds in. I have used it over the top of the run when they were younger to keep them from flying out. Now I have wire on top of my run. Originally before I put wire up I used it to contain my birds as they were getting in my gardens and mulch piles and tearing them apart, so it was either contain then or my gardens. The chickens lost. We had a dog then so I wasn't to concerned about preditors. The dog died last summer of old age.

II do use poultry wire in my runs but I also use 1 x2 inch welded wire first then I put 2 feet or so of chicken wire on the inside that way no coons can pull the chickens through the wire. My run is also dug down 2 feet with 1 x 2 wire going down the 2 feet. I also divide my run with chicken wire I dont need anything stronger as it does keep the chickens OK I wouldn't use it for the top of the run either. Coons and opossums can climb and rip right through that chicken wire. Been there done that with our first coop years ago.

Our main preditor issue is with hawks. It was cost prohibitive for us to cover our 12x30 run with wire. We used poultry netting. I don't think my birds are 100% safe, but I am sure it would slow down a hawk. Certainly, I have seen hawks fly over & check out my girls. No strikes so far...

it keeps your birds in,, and other birds out, hawks cant go through it,, they will get tangled up,, it keeps the doves and other birds from eating your food, bringing in disease and "bugs".

I used the poultry netting on the top of my run, but that's it. As stated, it will keep other birds out, but that is really the extent of it.

The bottom 2' of my run is constructed of heavy duty welded hardware cloth. The top 6' section of my run is constructed of welded 2 x 4 fencing. Then the poultry netting is over the top. Here's a pic to show you what I mean.

Good question CW...

So would it be a waste of time, money, and effort to cover a 15 x 20 ft run with chicken wire rather than netting? If chicken wire's not going to provide adequate protection anyway, then I'd rather just cover it with netting and take other measures (e.g. electric fence wire) to thwart predetors (e.g. dogs, coyotes).

Also, regarding fencing, if I'm going to do a double layer fence of 2 X 4 inch horse fencing and chicken wire, then would it be better to put the 2 X 4 on the outside of the (4 X 4) fence posts and the chicken wire on the inside of the posts, or both on the outside of the posts? (I'd guess the former.)

What do you think?

id put it on the inside,,, if you have it on the outside, and have little chicks, they get caught between the wire,, if its on the inside, they cant get in between em.
