Anyone have any idea what this is and/or how to treat it? It’s only on one leg. She isn’t showing any lameness. It is much paler, flaky, and has a mass right at the ankle. It is painful to the touch. None of our other girls have it. We clean our coop and run every day. We do use beach sand in our run. Didn’t know if that could be a contributing factor. TIA

I would keep it clean and use Vetericyn Plus Antimicrobial Wound I used it on my ducks and it helps a lot with healing and can she flatten her foot or does she tuck it under? I think it could be the start of leg mites heres a link to a site that will help. https://www.bhwt.org.uk/health-welfare/scaly-leg-why-are-my-hens-legs-scaly/#:~:text=If you are seeing scales,to feed on the keratin.
Thank you! I think we’ve decided it’s leg mites. Now just trying to move forward with treatment and whether to use ivermectin or not

It looks injured as well by the open skin and the dark green bruise in the picture. Leg mites may be an issue, and she could have pecked her own leg, but I would also look at it being a fractured ankle. Since she isn’t lame, it may respond to a warm soapy soak in Epsom salts water or soapy Dawn, and gentle cleaning with a tooth brush. Then dry the legs well, and apply a thick oil and rub it into legs twice a week. Castor oil, mineral oil, petroleum jelly, and vegetable oils are all good. Some also use a horse cream that has sulfur and pine oil called Nustock with good results.
