Chicken with broken middle toe

Yesterday I noticed my 16 wk chicken with a broken middle toe and a slight abrasion-did not look like an open fracture-just a superficial abrasion. I cleaned the abrasion and treated then splinted the toe. She seems to get around ok by limping and walking in it when she needs to. Eats and drinks fine. She just worries me. Any suggestions appreciated.

Looking for suggestions as to what to do when we go on a vacation in a week, I have someone to watch them-but that's just watering feeding, etc.

Thank you!

I would highly suggest that you use VetWrap to wrap the foot with rather than adhesive tape. It "conforms" much better to the area bandaged and stays on really well. VetWrap is a stretchy, somewhat 'sticky' tape that is used in hospitals all the time. It kinda 'stretches' as you wrap and sticks to itself...it's is GREAT stuff. Here in chicken land we call it VetWrap, but ask for it at your drug store and they'll have it I'm sure.

If toe has been bent for awhile, then there is no point in splinting b/c bones will have fused in place. If she is stressed due to toe being wrapped then remove wrap and leave toe alone,it will just be permanently bent, this is not an issue. If she is eating/drinking and pooping normal then do not worry she will be fine.

Ok I'll get some of that I used a small gauze pad to help protect most of skin but there is a lot still on the skin. How often do you change the splint/wrap

thank you for your help!

She seems to be fine eating and watering-of course getting spoiled with mealworms and yogurt by my kids. I think I caught the break right away she jumped while playing with my son. I am not quite sure the splint is really helping either-it seems bulky for her to run around on- she walks on it but would rather not use it. Maybe it's best to take it off. I just feel so bad! I thought raising children was hard!

Thank you so much for your input!
