i have some chickens out in my coop that arent feeling very well. some of them have foamy stuff around the edge of there eyes, some are sneezing, some have a runny nose and yesterday my grandmother picked up one of my new chickens and clear fluid came from her mouth. im treating the chickens with sulmet but im not sure if thats the best thing to use. i really dont want to cull them so im wondering what they have and how could i cure it. thanks for the help.

It so hard to diagnose any illness!!!! (Read that again)

But, I had a similar thing going on with my flock. I thought it was coryza, but the necropsy came back that it was the bacteria Pasteurella multocida. It is sensitive to naxcel, gentamicin, tetracycline, oxytetracycline, spectinomycin, penicillin g., erythromycin.

Pasteurella multocida is very contagious bacteria. Separate those with the symptoms and disinfect feeders, waterers, etc. often (clorox is cheap and easy). Sulmet didn't seem to work very well for me, but I am very happy with the results of the erythromycin and tylan 50.

Good luck!!!

thank you very much. what is it caused by? i was wondering if it can be caused my dust in the shavings i am using. since i am in wood shop at school i got some shaving that where very dusty. i read that that can effect them but im not sure. also they eat mice, moles, ect. could the mice have eaten some poision and then the chickens eat the poison when they ate the mouse. im not sure. and also where can i get the stuff you mentioned above? thanks.

It sound like the same symptoms my RIR's had, bubbly eye, snotty nose and sneezing. The vet told me to use Tylan 50 : use half a cc once a day for 3 days. It worked for me and my girls are back to normal and laying eggs!

This is also the dosage I used on my bantams, I went up to 1 cc for my Standard size. This is an injectable so you will need something to administer the medication with. I think you can get Tylan in powder form also, but it was not available at my local feed store.
