Hi, my chicken seemed very lethargic and when i checked her she has red mites all over her body.
Can someone please tell me what steps i need to take to treat her. Should i spray her with water and then spray her with dust+DE? She is barely moving her head and not eating or drinking.

My husband is working on cleaning the coop , so we are good with coop cleaning. All i need
help is how to treat and cure my chicken. She is not even drinking water on her own and we are feeding her with a dropper.

Help please!
Chickmama.

Is the weather hot?

The mites are certainly a problem, but if she is also too hot, that could be making her situation worse.

Taking her into the shade, or into an air conditioned house, might be reasonable things to try if the weather is hot (in addition to dealing with the mites, and making sure she gets food and water.)

DE is an OK preventive. Seven dust and poultry dust work the best.

Go to your TSC and get a permethrin based poultry dust or spray. Treat her and all your hens. Treat the coop.

DE is not going to be effective against and infestation.

For me, I would use Dust on the chickens and buy the Concentrate to treat the housing, don't forget roosting bars. Put the dust in a sock or pantyhose, bob or tap the sock on the chicken, making sure to get the dust up underneath the feathers. Around the vent, under wings, etc.

While you're at TSC, pick up a few packs of Sav A Chick electrolytes. Mix it up with cool water and provide that to your flock and your sick hen.

Syringe fluids into the hen that is not doing well. Fluids, fluids, fluids, once she's hydrated then offer wet feed.

Keep in mind, just going by the info you provided. She may have more than one thing going on but getting rid of the mites and getting her hydrated are the first things that need to be done.

The weather is in the mid 70's. But yes we have her in the shady area and in a special enclosure as she is the one most pecked at.

In my experience DE won't help, you need something like permethrin. Or I think in the US you have something called Sevin Dust? Red Mites usually feed on the chickens at night and live in the coop, rather than on the bird, but either way you have creepy crawlies and the same goes. Good luck with your chicken.
Good to know more about the red mites. I did get permethrin and my kids applied it under the wings and vent and all over her body.
