Chicken with skin ripped off wing feathers still intact

My chicken is a mutt rhode island red mixed with welsummer. About 8 weeks old. managed to wedge itself under some chicken wire and ripped the skin off off the wing. It is not flowing blood but is bloody. A friend helped me put bag balm on it. She (the chicken) has calmed down and is drinking and eating. I put her back in the brooder cage by herself. All her feathers are still attached. Should I be doing anything else for her? What do I look for as a sign of infection and how long should I isolate her? Should I clip the feathers on the injured skin?

HI Sorry about your girl they can get into predicaments sometimes. From what you said ( Maybe post a pic of the wound and folks can give you better detailed information I would continue keeping her separate until its scabbed over if thats possible. If the feathers on the injured skin are loose or look to be pulling on the wound I would clip them. There is a product called Blu-kOTE.. that is excellent in healing and protecting. Its an antiseptic . It never hurts to add Sav-A Chic or other type of electrolyte to an injured birds water. Just an added boost to help healing.Also to help healing ProBitics are great addition, Plain yogurt and or cottage cheese are good and a little added protein. If mine are eating just fine I usually give them a little bit of BOSS extra each day.

Re introducing her to the other birds is gonna be the trick depending on the others temperment. They tend to peck ant things that look different. Wounds, missing feathers etc. So letting her heal and applying Blucote to any non feathered area is a good idea. There is also a couple products I use... Its a lotion.. Its called No Peck or Rooster Booster, It taste bad and the others usually leave it alone. Blue Cote is the same its Purple. So whichever you can find easiest in your area.

As far as infection. Use your eyes and smell On the wing and tailfeather area when a bird is healing the skin can look odd and even usually because of the medicine we are using different colors as it repairs itself. If you keep the area clean you usually dont have to worry. Concern comes from white, or yellow puss, green discharge. Very red swollen hot to the touch areas that you see. Fowl rotten smells from the wound area are all signs of infection and need to be addressed ASAP. One more thing to be aware of. If you are in a warm area and the bird is outside in a pen sometimes flies will be attracted to the wounded area. In deep wounds they can be known to lay eggs in the wound. Not a good scenerio. So keep that in mind and keep an eye out for that.

Thanks so much for the advice. I went and got some blu-kote and sav-a-chic this morning. My friend is coming over to help me treat her again. I think we are going to take of the feathers that are hanging out of place and spray it with the blu-kote. I already added the sav-a-chic to her water. I hope this helps her. I will post more pics after we remove the feathers.

From the pics you posted it doesnt look too bad Im glad you got the Blue Kote its great stuff. Just keep the area clean and give her a bit of time to heal
