Is anyone else seeing chickens get sores at the corners of their mouths during the heat wave? My daughters are afraid of wet pox, but as much as they have been panting, I wonder if it might be from the panting.

We have a fan in the coop, but they go under the coop during the day so it must be cooler there. I don't know what else to do for them during this heat. :-(

I don't know of any bumps they can get from heat but mine have had some from fowl pox. Most are not really suffering at all. One however didn't feel like eating and I had to bring her in and encourage her to eat. Another had badly swollen eyes...both of them. She too had to be encouraged to eat.

Did you treat the bumps or do they go away eventually? My little guy still has a swollen eye but I have been trying to open it a little to let some of the fluid out and hopefully relieve any pressure. Poor thing, I hope it doesn't cause him to lose sight in that eye.

Yes you need to keep trying to keep the pressure down. THat's all really you can do. It will take some weeks really for it to go. I think my silkie that had the eyes swollen shut was like that for maybe three weeks then it started going down. She has some sight but it did do some damage.

I do have another question (this may be silly question). The little chicken, Willy, is the one with the swollen eye and he rubs his eye sometimes on his back (almost ontop of his back between the wings) and the fluid from his eye gets in his feathers and makes them crusty and stringy when it dries. Should I clean him up with warm water and a rag, maybe? Or do they clean themselves? Not really sure how that works.
