i have a bantam rooster that won't use his legs. He moves them and kick some them around but won't/can't stand up on them and when he tries he just flops around.

Greetings Stormrobin,

Can you provide more information?

  • How old is the rooster?

  • When did he lose the ability to stand?

  • Does he free range?

  • Examine him for any tumors or injuries, report findings?

  • Examine the base of his feathers, is there any swelling or redness?

  • Do you smell any strange odors coming from him?

  • What are you feeding him?

  • He attempts to eat in the video, is his crop full?

  • Does he feel thin?

  • When did you last worm him?

  • Poops normal? They appear normal in the video.

  • Are any of the other chickens showing signs of illness?

Please describe any relevant findings as best as you can. Then, the members at BYC will have more to go on.

The rooster also appears to be in respiratory distress. Listen to his chest for any rattling. Check for nasal discharge.

Poor fellow, he is very ill. Keep him warm and in a quiet place. Some electrolytes in his water would be good, too.

God Bless! :(

Sorry about the lack of info. He is eight months old. He lost his ability to walk about two days ago when I brought him in the house, before that he would teeter around unbalanced for about a week. I thought at first his feet we getting cold so I put more straw in his coop and speed some out on the run ground. So he is not free range and he lives with just one other rooster. No injuries or tumors no swelling or redness around feathers he kinda smells sour if you get really close. HE normally eat some scratch all flock and layer crumbles right now he is on chick starter I thought maybe it would give him a nutrition boost. Full crop, a bit hard but not a rock. I can feel his breast bone sticking out. I'm not sure exactly how to tell under weight. I know really skinny and not skinny at all. He's not deathly skinny. I have not wormed. Normal poops. No other chickens showing signs there is a close by coop and run. No discharge from eyes or nose no cough no rattles when breathing he only started breathing like that when I brought him into the house. But when I was looking him over it looked like he had canker sores in his mouth right at the corners of his mouth.

He would try and walk when I had him on the blanket. What other pictures would be helpful?

Can you open his mouth and look to see if there are any white or yellow sores in the mouth/throat?

Please establish, if there is any foul smelling fluid coming up from the crop?

If you feel his keel bone, he is underweight. Not able to get nutrients, why? Maybe sores in throat...

The chick starter is good but, moisten it, soft foods for now. Also, offer scrambled egg, cooked & diced meat, diced - black or red grapes, cooked: brown rice, oat groats, pearl barley, cooked mixed vegetables (frozen is good).

God Bless!
