Welcome to BYC, Dave.
I would say remember the basics and keep it simple.
1. 12" of roost space per chicken and a little extra for new commers or loners.
2. 3' to 4' sq of floor space per chicken in the coop and 15 sq ft per chicken in the run
3. 12" plus of ventilation per chicken in the coop
Walkin coops & runs are best.
Everyone should have a run because even if you intend to free range there will be times when thats not possible. Bad weather and predators for instance. You should have at least two waterers and two feeders and some hiding spots in your run.
Good luck with your plans.

Hi,
I’m ChickenDave, a newly retired mechanical engineer who is planning on raising about 10 chickens for eggs.

I’m looking at 6 Rhode Island Reds and 4 Aracauna or Ameraucana (I like blue eggs).

Right now I’m looking for DIY coop designs. I have lots of room so space is not a consideration.

Any help or ideas are appreciated.
If anyone can recommend a good book with lots of cool design ideas, I would be most grateful.

Thanks!
Chicken Dave
