Hello! I'm new here and just mostly looking in to get information. I have thought about keeping chickens for a long time and now that we're getting a few acres, I thought I might stop thinking and start doing. Except, I'm a little chicken (see what I did there?).

I've never owned chickens and I've only been around a few small flocks that friends of mine have had, and for the most part, I don't think they were really INTO their chickens, they just liked having a few eggs or meat birds around. I tend to get attached to my pets so, I think having chickens might be different for me than it was for them.

I have 100's of questions and many might seem really out there - like, how do you introduce your chickens to your dogs? Or .. can you? And, how good on chickens on a compost pile really?

Also, I probably have a lot of newbie kinds of questions like what breeds would be good for beginners and how would one get involved with showing their chickens. Things like that.

Welcome from the Ocean State!

I'd start by reviewing the Learning Center.. After that just post any questions you have. Lots of great people and info on BYC.

Take the plunge. You won't regret it.

Welcome to BYC! x2 on the Learning Center, it really is the best place to start. Regarding dogs, in my opinion they should be kept separate at all times. My exception is my 7 pound Chihuahua, who gets picked on by my Orpington. Best of luck to you.

Enjoy this new adventure you are on and if you have any questions, feel free to ask. Welcome to our flock!

Welcome to the flock, I agree with Liz, I think it's best if dogs and chickens NEVER meet. You never hear of chickens killing a dog. But, dogs (usually family pets) often end up killing them even if just playing. Fun for the dog but, death for the chicken

Welcome to BYC! X2 on Elizabeth's and drumstick divas' advice. Dogs and chickens generally do not mix well. As for what breeds would be good for beginners, I would recommend calm and gentle breeds like Australorps, Orpingtons, Brahmas, Sussex, Cochins, or Faverolles. All of these breeds have a reputation for good temperament, and I have had all of them except the Faverolles (a neighbor of mine had them), and they have lived up to their docile reputations. If you want lots of eggs, the Australorps are the best layers of the standard, brown egg laying breeds. There are plenty of other good breeds as well and I suggest that you research the various breeds and see which one appeals to you. A good place to start is the "Breeds" icon at the top of the page. For quick referencing of the different breeds, there are excellent charts at http://albc-usa.etapwss.com/images/uploads/docs/pickachicken.pdf, http://www.mypetchicken.com/chicken-breeds/breed-list.aspx, and http://www.sagehenfarmlodi.com/chooks/chooks.html Also Murray McMurray Hatchery has an excellent "Chick Selector" at http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/chick_selector.html to help you find out what would be the best breed for you (just be sure and click on "show more characteristics'). Whatever breeds you decide upon, good luck with your flock.
