Chickens.. Afraid of the Dark??!

How old are your chickens? Do they have a light as adults? Is that good, or should they learn to get used to the dark and go to sleep?

I think they should get used to the dark, and learn to go to sleep when it gets dark.

I agree.

I'm so glad someone else posted this question. I've been feeling guilty about my 7 week old chicks ever since I put them outside because this is exactly what they do! I have them in a coop within a coop (I too have older hens) and then huddle by the little door we made for them and peep even after it's gotten dark. I've felt so guilty. I cover them with towels because it's still chilly here at night (fog) but they've not enjoyed being outside. They still peep even after having been out for a week! Can't wait till I can let them in the coop with my other hens.

We've been using solar yard lights inside the coop - initially in the Fall to give them some more light to keep them laying eggs. But it is so easy! The solar collector is on top of the coop. The light isn't super bright - but it makes it easy to take attendance after dark....... and no addition to the old electric bill.

I wanted to do this for my teenage chicks..because their father was afraid of the dark till he died. I have some solar yard lights that my husband hung outside the window of the one coop-
What kind of yard light did you use and how did you do this?
