Chickens and Snakes

That's pretty funny... but only because I'm not afraid of snakes! Now, if it were me and a spider, I probably would have dropped dead.

Okay, that's just a freaky story. I think 99% of people would be jolted and of those 80% would have had a heart attack!

I've got a quick story (not totally related, but still fun). When I was in scouts we were at a reservation and they had a really old permanent "porta-potty". I went to use it late at night and as I was sitting there something hit me on the head. I thought maybe it was a piece of the old shingles / wood, maybe a pine cone? I turned on my flashlight and saw a tiny bat fluttering on the ground... I looked up and saw a bunch of them on the ceiling. I was a bit freaked out.

When I was younger we would get big Gopher Snakes that would raid our nest boxes. My grandma always chopped them up with a shovel. Now I catch them and release them. I could never kill a snake, they do too much for the ecosystem. Please, if you do wind up with a snake try your best to move it. It wasnt too fun to see my grandma chop a snake to pieces just cause it was hungry! Its not like we didnt have a million hens for eggs, lol.

I just got around to checking the snake inquiry this evening.
Thanks for all the replies. When I catch a snake I don't usually kill it. I walk it a few hundred feet into the woods and just hope it wont come back.
If I see them more than usual I will kill them instead.

The snake "tasting my neck story" is still making me squirm.

Thanks everyone...

OK, so I probably should NOT have read this thread before bed.....

I am sure I will dream of a few snakes now.

I dont go in the coop after dark....for just that reason. Im thinking the way the girls fight for a worm...they MIGHT get a snake dinner as well. I know...if I see one....I think involuntary reactions might make the snake a gonner.

Well the older I get the more scared of them I get when I have encounters with them.

I never get used to the shock of happening upon one. It sends my heart to racing.

I don't like them and I don't want them around where I am. I have caught a few black snakes in the past and relocated them, but I probably want ever do that anymore. I never know if I am going to get by with just wetting my paints, or if I am going to fall out dead with a heart attack one day, or both.
