Having this issue currently with a turkey and it looked like 5x4 inch wound and similar to above, I found a sterile saline wash spray for wounds in a can and it rinses out the wound with a bit of pressure and get will get it cleaner without touching the wound, I used silver honey and alginate covering as there was a pocket between the wound the the side of her ribs and it went in deep and I packed it and of course it hurt so I used aspirin baby per google search for her weight. I divided doses through out the day to help keep pain down and it helped, She did start to peck and pick at it and any covering I used even if I just used the triple antibiotic ointment I used on top of the packing to seal out dirt and keep it moist to help it heal. I finally ended up after several days of her getting it off, using coban adhesive and wrapping it around her torso like a burrito and that helped her pain and with criss crossing it under and between her legs it helped to hold it in place and not slide back. Having perfected that I leave it and watch day for eatting drinking and so forth, she is back out with flock to help her distract from pecking and she is happier, I bring her in at night, she is doing well and no infection, I look and smell for anything off like in appearance and odor, it is slow but surely apears to be healing. I don't fuss to much but it will be a bit longer... I also had a flap of skin that dehydrated and was thick by the time I noted her limping a day after the injury, and it could not be sutured as not enough was there, so after lathering it in antibiotic ointment and cut the closest feathers back a bit, I noted it was not looking ok so I used a bit of lidocaine skin ointment for people and put it on skin to numb it a bit and then used iodine to disinfect where I need to cut it off and surrounding area. After several minutes, I used a new scapel and cut it off, and had a powder stop bleeding spray on hand and it was used by my helper as I cut the skin away as it did bleed,... she is ok and now is better. WHEW, I am a nurse but retired now and used my skills but I am not sure all would be approved by others, I did the best for my baby as no vets where I am at and no way I was not going to use everything I could think of to help her and NOT cull her unless suffering was increasing and or massive infection or lack of healing. She was ok with all I used and I hope I gave you ideas. If I had a vet I would of used one, so this is not replace a vet for medical care if you can use that. I am not a vet by any means. I did not get pics at the time, but will post healing, its been two weeks and still packing the pocket which needs it to close up. The missing wound area with no skin looks good like a big dried moist scab and I keep antibiotic oint on it adding some when I check it every three days approx (as long as her is acting the same and not acting worse) which would be a need to check it sooner, otherwise it just needs time to be left alone...
