Watched mine last week for half an hour dragging and tenderizing a toad about the run. Roo wanted it for him self, the hens would go after him for a bit, then when things quited down he would offer it up to favorite girl. She would be all happy started clucking away and strutting the toad about the other hens would mob her steal the toad and the roo would go back in to regain the toad only to have the whole sequence repeat. Chicken TV re-run.
Yeh, he is just learning to be a roo, hopefully a good one. One point he was losing the battle and I grabbed the toad up and offered it to him off to the side thinking he could go offer it to his girl and win points with her. Did I get stink eyes, he was not going to accept my charity. LOL, so I tossed the toad back in and left them to it.

I have hanging galvanized feeders and trough feeders in the run. I empty all of these into a metal pail with a lid after my chickens go to bed. Then I put the pail in my garage.
The only downside is that I spill some of the feed (just a few grains, not much) as I pour. Actually, though, the chickens spill more than I do throughout the day. I feed whole grains, so it won't hurt them if it gets wet overnight. They will just sprout.

We have a metal hanging feeder in our tractor and haven't had problems with mice at night - we have to keep all of our feed in large plastic bins with locking lids in the shed to keep it from being eaten by other critters. We've had mice in our garage where there is no chicken feed at all...
Anyway, I hear your concern in not taking it that chickens are an answer to rodents. Sometimes, I'm just a little too "farm" and possibly have some red highlights on my neck that compromise my ability to realy follow the logic of these city slicker anti chicken folk.
I have those red highlights too. I hear there's a cure, but I wasn't interested.
I realize this is an old thread so I dont know who will see this, but...We've seen mole hills popping up around the the outside of our coop and the chickens yard. One hill popped up overnight right in the middle of the chickens yard. As soon as we let them out this morning they were scratching in it. Dont know if they found anything.
