Chickens are penned, do they need deworming

I have 8 week old chicks. They are kept in a pen and do not forage in the yard as we live in the city. Do chickens that are penned need deworming?
You could take a poop sample to the vet to be tested.....and then go from there. There is plenty of information out about natural prevention of worms. Take a look on this site and you'll find alot of great info . I for one like to use the preventitive ways- first. I do give my girls pumpkin seeds, they also get yogurt and cayenne and garlic ocassinally- I do have their poop tested about twice a year. So far no worms. I think 8 weeks old is to young to be guessing if they have worms and just medicate them for the heck of it. Good Luck

Thank you Centrarchid and Joe. I will consider possible solutions upon determination of infection.

Have a great holiday!

Cyclingchix,

My post was what I do during the fall .... (as a preventative)....... not at times of infection. I was under the impression that you had no infection present currently. I'm sorry if I misinterpreted your original post. If you do find that you wind up with a wormy problem at some point pumpkin seeds would probably not be the solution at that point, I don't know, because like I said in my now erased post I have not had a worm problem in the years that I have had chickens. It is my belief (and I am not a scientist) that the pumpkin parts & seeds are the reason why.

I was just trying to share what has worked for me. It may or may not be practical for everybody, and I do not look down on people who use the chemicals. There is no shame in having healthy livestock no matter how you do it, to each their own, and live and let live.

I just thought my post may generate some interest in the subject of the natural ways because at some point something was mentioned about products not being "indicated" for egg layers. I am just trying to share and that is it. As Lorain's fids said there are a lot of great resources right here on BYC about natural things people can do for their chickens.

Happy Holidays to You Too !!
