Saving Battery Hens at Happy Hen Chicken Rescue in
My Coop
My Coop
Sometimes I feel like people don't think chickens are smart. I feel like it's just because they are a livestock animal, and most people eat them. But really they are smart. They have a whole pecking order, they have to memorize who is where in the order. Each one is a unique individual with his/her own personality. They know if a chicken or a person is a stranger or a familiar face. They are sad when a friend dies. Sometimes scared after a predator kills one of their flock members. After my rooster was killed by a hawk ( he was the best roo ever) all my chickens didn't come out of the barn, if they did it was just for a second!

Snapple The Hen:
My hen Snapple is a very smart gal! She comes when I call and comes on my lap when I tell her. She learned her name without me even trying! I just talked to her a lot when she was young, saying her name. Then one day I randomly bent down and yelled "Snapple!" and she came running! When I yell anything else she doesn't come. Now I decided to train her!

New Discovered Facts About Chickens:
Recently there was a test about how smart chickens are. In fact they can do math! Example: if you said A is greater then B and B is greater than C they could tell you that A is greater then C! They were able to teach chickens their name and other tricks! They even discovered that chickens are smarter than an average 4 year old!

Eddy The Rooster:
My rooster Eddy knows if your a stranger or a familiar face. He always attacks strangers but not his family. He runs when a stranger tries to hold him and doesn't care I pick him up!

Each Chicken is Different:
Each one of my chickens is different. My hen Red comes in my house jumps on the counter and eats all my food. My hen Olive comes in my house jumps on the counter and lays an egg. My hen Daisy comes in the house and sits on the couch, and so does Eddy. My hen Herki loves strawberries. My rooster Eddy hates strawberries! Some of my chickens don't like eating tomatoes some do!

As you may now see if you didn't before chickens are smart!

Oddly I just heard something on NPR where they were testing how smart dolphins are in relation to other manuals. They discovered that dolphins are either dumbstruck than we thought or chickens are smarter than we thought. Didn't hear the whole story, was just
Gettining in the car & heard the tail end. I want to go to their site & hopefully read the whole thing.

Hey, Memphis, I was curious about what you mentioned so I did an internet search. I couldn't find it on the NPR site but, I think the radio piece you heard was referring to a book that was recently published examining some of the science studying dolphin intelligence. He might be asking if we are over estimating dolphin intelligence or are we underestimateing other animals' intelligence.

Thanks Scratch n Peck! They were talking about dolphin intelligence potentially being over estimated. Was half listening until they mentioned chickens!
Thanks for the link!

So very true! Chickens are smart! I love that article that said they are as smart as the average 4 year old! I love each of their personalities too! Thanks for the info, your flock sounds soooo cute!
