chickens arent supposed to eat peas?

I'm curious about this since feeds that do not rely on Soy or animal products for protein frequently have dried lentils or peas high on the ingredients list. I've fed both to my chickens mixed in with a large rubber feed tub of decomposed granite so they have to scratch for it with good results to try to increase their protein level. Any comments?

Dry legumes have a protein inhibitor that can be dangerous. Soy and common beans (esp. red beans) and fava beans have a lot. (Never feed these raw to chickens or other animals.) Peas, lentils and mung beans have some, but not enough to cause immidiate problems (meaning they must be eaten in large quantities over a long period of time to effect animals). From what I understand, green beans and peas in pods and on the vine are fine.

Heat treating, sprouting or soaking legumes in lukewarm water for 4-8 hours destroys most or all of this inhibitor.

I am one of those people who believe that chicken won't eat anything that is going to hurt them. Heck they eat styrofoam insulation and survive with noooo problem. One of mine even stuck her stupid head into a bucket of laytex paint wiped off her beak and kept going.

We had to remove a large piece of styrofoam from our storage area, because the chickens were devouring it! Then, one day I was in my she-shed & I kept hearing a thumping sound. When I finally went to investigate, it was all 14 of our hens pounding away at the styrofoam insulation that we had put around our water/pipe entry site to my shop! They had eaten large chunks of it! We had to enclose that with tin to keep them from getting access. I don’t know why they hunt it out & eat it.

At least 2 of the feeds that i buy have peas in it. Yeah its good for them
