chickens as house pets? Opinions and views

she has gotten so big!
I know!! And she is sassy and funny and rules. The cats wont bother her because she showed them what it feels like for nosy noeaes to get pecked. :)
The dogs seem to have learned the same lesson lol. Bit I never leave her unattended.
She has a friend now..sort of.

I hope that young turkey is either a hen for breeding or a pet. There's no way I could eat a drumstick that I'd personally put back together!

Don't take advice from people that have not done it. My duck lives indoors and many people have something to say about me keeping a single duck indoors. They always ask what her special need is and assume she's not a normal duck. Well she 100% is a normal duck, she hatched on her own no problem and has been living inside since day one. She will never go to live outdoors as she doesn't want to. If it is cold out and we go outside for a little bit, she'll quickly run back to the front door watching the dog and waiting for me to let her back in. She doesn't enjoy the cold or mucky water. She accustomed to warmth and always having clean, clear water to swim in. Yes, she's spoiled and loves every day of her life. She's not having any issues being alone either because she's always inside hanging out with me. Best thing to do is get a pack of diapers. I let her hangout in her large pen right next to me and then she doesn't need her diaper on. I use duck designated towels and blankets as bedding or across me if she's hanging out on me. She absolutely loves our relationship and strives for my approval. We cuddle all the time and she's sooooo friendly. My reasoning for keeping her indoors were a few different things. At first she was just my only duck and I had a coop but she wasn't headed out there alone. After that point since I only had one duck, we became very attached to each other. She was imprinted on humans and especially me. Everyone likes to tell me this is cute but it's not going to work because she "hasn't hit maturity yet." Well actually, she has... and everything is still fine. She'll be laying soon and she has a little house in her pen that I think she'll make a nest out of. She has great relationship with my dog. She is the happiest duck and she wouldn't want anything to change. Another reason she never went outside was she became like an ESA for myself. We grew so close and have so much love, trust and respect for each other. I can promise you she is not suffering or missing out. This is what she prefers now too. She does not attract bugs into my house or make it gross. I grew up in a home that was kept overly clean and taught to do the same. I have guests over all the time that come to and see her pen. I change out the towels or blanket every 2-3 days and it is fine. It doesn't smell, there isn't an unbearable amount of poop. It never smells bad in the room of her pen either. There is a window above her I keep slightly open for ventilation. She is my bestfriend and I would recommend keeping an indoor flock mate. It is in their nature to be very loyal and loving. I wouldn't suggest ducks just since it is better to keep them with friends ( I am my ducks friend) but with chickens, it can work even better! Depending on your situation, it can be just a truly great thing. Here are some pictures! (Don't use the puppy pads in the pen... it was a bad idea. She wanted to eat them...Use the blankets or towels you can tuck under the bottoms of the pen) IMG_0458.jpg IMG_0460.jpg IMG_0466 2.jpg IMG_0474.JPG IMG_0476.JPG IMG_0495.jpg IMG_0501.jpg IMG_0506.PNG IMG_0122.jpg IMG_0225.PNG IMG_0128.JPG IMG_0126.JPG IMG_0127.JPG

Never did it but It does not sound good. They poop everywhere.
Yes once again.... you don't have a chicken or duck running around your house pooping all over. They either keep a diaper on and poop in the diaper or they're on a blanket or towel that they're allowed to poop on which get's cleaned and swapped out pretty much every 2 days. I take my towels and blankets to the laundry mat so it never even touches my washer. Babies poop a lot too.... I don't see anyone throwing their babies outside and telling them to live in it.

Never thought about free ranging babies....I might have kids after all.:caf
