chickens attacking hen ??

i have an establish flock of mix breed chickens
earlier i was checking the run and suddenly the rooster attacked a hen, and once he had her down, the other hens jumped in for the kill.
It was bazaar
I scooped her off the ground and she had several deep wounds, so i took her to a quarentine cage.

she is eating and acting fine.
Any clues to what starts this behavior ??

Hmmm? Possibly in most cases they know she isn't well so get rid of her..
Culling is what I do....

Happened to my hen one day, because I was in the coop hand feeding her! Jealousy? maybe!
