Chickens Comb

Very good...the comb can change color for different reasons. The chicken's poop, appetite, water intake, and posture, are the best indicators that a chicken is sick. Many times they'll get a tummy ache and it will resolve without you ever noticing. A good time to observe them is in the morning, do they come out of the house, do they eat and drink. Or, are they fluffed up and walking slowly with tail down. Of course as they age, and are not laying, their eating schedule changes, sometimes they'll come out look around and seem uninterested in food. But, if you watch them throughout the day you will know each hen's normal behavior. And when they are sick your red flag will go up! If you see something that doesn't look right to you, just ask the BYC members. They are very savvy and want your hens to do well. It's always better to be safe than sorry...

My hens are all standing at the coop door when I go to let them out. When I open the door they fight to see who gets out first then run as fast as they can to the area I feed their scratch grain at. They are hillarious. As I stated they seem fine but I just noticed the blue tips on her comb and got worried.

I know...sometimes I hear a sneeze as I'm cleaning up, and I freeze and look up. Who did that? My heart starts to pump a little faster...then, there it is again. Oh, the hen got some feed dust into her nostril! I'll say "woopie-woopie-woopie", "That's it girl, get it all out...cause mama don't want any sick chickies!" LOL!
It's so funny, how we get so attached to these little creatures. I enjoy them so much, even though they burn me out once in a while. Mainly when one gets sick, so, keep them healthy!
God Bless!

Yeah it kills me when they are sick. They know I love them though. I sing to them every morning when I go to let them out. My neighbors probably think I'm crazy

OMG! I thought I was the only crazy chicken singer! Ha-ha-ha!!! That is so funny! I haven't sang since I was a kid. Back then students had music time and I loved it. But kids used to tease me and say "You can't sing", and they'd plug their ears.
But since I got chickens 5 years ago, I have been singing like crazy...but only to my chickens. I sing a 'good morning' song, a 'rooster' song, a 'hen name' song for each of my 9 hens, and a 'poop' song as I clean around the pen!
Yup, my neighbors probably think I'm a horrible singing nut! LOL! :lau

The crazy chicken lady :yesss:

Enjoy those chickens they are some of God's most special creation. They are so underestimated and misunderstood too. It's the memories of joyful times with my chickens that keep me grounded, when one passes away. Having chickens can be stressful when they are sick, injured or pass away. But yeah...they are worth it. Not just cause they give us eggs, because they make me laugh and sing!
