Chickens are very habitual. If they slept in the box they want to go BACK to the box. If you interrupt their routine, they will stand at the door, because they know that is where YOU come out of, and cry... to get your attention so you come out and FIX what their little drama is. Night time they feel much more secure in a coop or somewhere, not out in the wide open.
Mine do it often for various reasons. I don't wake up at 5 am like they do, and am not out by 504 am with their food, let's stand by his door and CRY. It's 3 pm he didn't come out and give us a treat yet, I KNOW.. lets stand by the door and CRY!!
They'll get over if if you ignore them long enough
