Chickens didn't come out of the rain?????

When we clean the pen on the weekend, they LOVE it when we are wetting down the pen. Then they play in the mud when we are done - worms and bugs and stuff make for great treats :)

mine stayed in this morning in a storm but as soon as it slowed down they were out. I didnt feel bad when I took my son to school and saw a neighbors chickens out as well.

Yay! We aren't alone in thinking our chickens are slow for not coming in out of the rain.

We live in FL and it rains all summer long. Plus, we have been hit by the rain/wind bands of two hurricanes. All 3 of our chickens sat outside in the rain and wind. Silly things. My youngest was so worried about them that she kept trying to sneak outside in tropical storm winds to check on her babies. The chickens seem to really love the rain and it keeps them clean, so we let them get soaked.

So where did "mad as a wet hen" come from?

Mine stay out in the rain and act normally except extra shaking. After Hannah went through Saturday, they were all sitting around having a good time preening and showing off their clean feathers.

Seeing all the fun the chickens (and wild birds) have in a warm rain makes me wonder . . .

Maybe the real question is ~

why don't we stay out in the rain???

Over the weekend we got hit with an awful rainstorm leftover from the Hurricane. It pured so hard you could barely see for hours. Well it was fine out in the morning and so I let them out figuring I would check them if it started to rain.

I fell asleep and when I woke from my catnap it was pouring and I went out to check them. They were huddled underneath the coop where I have a 2 foot high run area so it was dry, except I couldnt get them in. What did I do? Put down the umbrella and crawled under the coop on my belly, through mud, of course, to reach them and put them inside the coop.

Poor things were scared to come out and get wet to get up the ramp and I knew the area underneath was going to get flooded from that kind of downpour. I am insane!!

Michigan here too and all of mine are cooped but the run isn't covered and the coop is a rabbit hutch with two separate levels with a tarp on top, and they were freaking out with the water dripping down from the top on to them so I put another tarp on top of that one and they calmed down. They are so entertaining...
